Conversations with myself (Holo addiction)

They call it internal monologue, but for me, it’s more of an internal dialogue.

“OOH, WILL YOU LOOK AT THOSE HOLOS!”
“Yes, they’re very pretty.”
“I MUST HAVE THEM ALL!”
“But when you bought those spectraflair topcoats, you said we’d never have to buy holos again.”
“You’re so naive. Have you met me? Of course I have to buy more polish.”
“But you said you could just put it on your favourite polishes and turn them into holos.”
“Yes, I could. But none of my polishes is that exact shade of green! And the holo looks different!”
“Okay, so maybe one or two. I must admit, that green holo is exceptionally pretty.”
“ALL THE COLOURS.”
“There’s three different greens there. And you just ordered another green holo yesterday.”
“SO?”
“Point taken. But think of the shipping.”
“They’ve reduced shipping.”
“Maybe, but we might have to pay customs.”
“But see, if I buy this many polishes, the import duties will still be lower than the shipping for a second order would be. So I’m actually saving us money by buying more!”
“You already said that with yesterday’s order.”
“That does not invalidate my argument.”
“I'm not sure it's valid in the first place...Well, okay then, but make sure the import duties you’re incurring stay below shipping costs.”
“But then I can’t take all the greens!”
“... You must be gutted they reduced shipping.”

Literary Lacquers: Green Gables, Lake of Shining Waters, Raspberry Cordial?, More Like Fire Than Light

(Two hours later)

“I see you finally decided, just got the order confirmation. Good work not going over the customs limit, but I don’t see any greens.”
“Yeah, I changed my mind. I really wanted the blue and the purple and you were right, that green kinda looked similar to the one I ordered yesterday and OH GOD I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE GREEN SHOULDN'T I?!"
“Well, you're not getting it now, you already placed the order."
“BUT I WILL DIE.”

I Love Nail Polish: Bohemian Peacock, Amanda Hugginkiss, Blue Steel

(Ten days later)

“They’re here! They’re here!”
“Which order?”
“Both! Look how pretty!

“Wow. Just wow.”
“I knew you’d like them!”
“Hey, just because I’m trying to be the voice of reason here doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate polish.”
“And look what a pretty rainbow they make together.”
“So we don’t have to buy the whole range of Dance Legend Prism holos after all?”
“Haha. You’re funny.”
All the glorious holos in a row. Swatches coming soon. Spoiler: I'm in love!
Also, I totally should've gotten the green one all the colours.

Haul May/Mai 2013

As promised, here's my May haul - at least this one's pretty much on time.

May was definitely an indie month for me. After falling in love with Literary Lacquers in April and seeing The Crumpet's orange holo comparison (do they measure impact ratings in the blog world, like with scientific publications? Because Debbie is definitely on the A-list.)
I got Greatest Treasures, an amazing orange holo that bends into purple. I had this on my nails a few weeks ago and I couldn't stop staring at them and holding them into the light (this was when we still had sunlight, before the rains came and turned Central Europe into November). Gift of the Magi is a very dense green and silver glitter from the collection of the same name (I haven't read the story but it sounds lovely). What Fools These Mortals Be, finally, is from the Midsummer Night's Dream collection - a raucous explosion of glitter of all shapes, sizes and colours. (If you like the look of these, have a look at her new Green Gables collection - the green and turquoise holos are to die for. Guess what you'll be seeing in the June haul post.)

I discovered I Love Nail Polish through a swatch post on Work Play Polish, which featured really beautiful colours. Sadly, both Simply Adorablue and Grape Alicious were sold out (in fact, pretty much all the holos were), so I consoled myself with a couple of Monterey Bay minis and two spectraflair top coats - they're called My Private Rainbow, one is linear, the other is a mix of linear and scattered holo. They sort of smell like glue but the sparkle is amazing! I've been putting it on pretty much every mani at some point. Monterey Bay is a deep green holo with a touch of blue and does not smell, so maybe it's something about the spectraflair base? (Sshh! New collection out today at 3pm MST, which is 11pm Central European Time).

The top picture shows my pick-me-up drugstore acquisitions - if I need cheering up, I'll usually just buy one or two polishes. This also explains the bright colours. I decided I desperately needed more green, so I got s-he 305 and s-he 310. The first one (305) isn't really a colour I'd wear by itself but it should look great in nail art, but 310 is fun and fresh, rather greener than your average mint.
Next is iQ gloss effect in Pink Lady (7) - I bought it for the June tri-polish challenge (at least that was my excuse), but it turns out my other colours don't go with it as well as I hoped. Still, pink!
I'm always on the search for the perfect TARDIS blue. Oh my GOSH Cobalt blue isn't it, but it is truly beautiful. And finally we have The Dark Knight from Catrice, a lovely deep purple.

If you felt there weren't enough blue polishes in my haul this month, you'd be right - there is more.
I was in Germany in May and decided to try Rival de Loop, which we don't get here. For some reason I thought this was a higher-end brand so I was surprised at the low prices, but it really isn't that great. The blue one (High Gloss Colour 043Q) is a nice muted shade, but Express Nails 202, the black with the red glitter, fell a bit short of my expectations - the glitter is hardly visible on the nails. They're also both not very durable and take forever to dry.

When I bought the golden essence 140 go bold! polish for my Iron Man look, I also picked up 147 miss universe, which is a nearly black base with a blue-turquoise shimmer. It's very beautiful on its own, but I need to try it over black and blue.

It seems everyone's always raving about Burt's Bees, so I got myself a "tips and toes kit" with a variety of hand and foot care products as well as lip butter. Since it also includes cuticle butter, it seemed appropriate to include it here (plus I ran out of stuff to show you, so enjoy the closeups of the Literary Lacquers). I think it goes without saying that you shouldn't get Burt's Bees products if you don't like the smell of honey/beeswax, but be aware that the other scents are very strong as well. I like the lemon in the cuticle cream and can deal with the coconut in the foot cream, but the almond milk beeswax hand cream smells too strongly of marzipan for my taste. Good stuff though, all of it. Plus, I get to say that I'm...

Haul April 2013

It's been a while since my last haul post... which of course means that I have an embarrassing amount of nail polish to show you... though perhaps not quite enough, as you'll see tomorrow. In an attempt to not turn this into complete picture spam, I'm making two posts and using collages - you can click on them to enlarge.

So I discovered H&M has polish in fantastic colours! This is a pack of five mini polishes with the imaginative names glittery purple, glittery green, turquoise, orange, and yellow, and the more excitingly named Shanghai Nights. Glittery purple is a mix of tiny bars and round glitter particles in purple, gold, and teal in a relatively clear base, while glittery green should be called glittery teal, because the round glitter here is teal (not that I'm complaining!), also in a clear base. The orange is slightly sparkly and tends towards red, really pretty. The other two are more on the creme-y side, and it just so happens that the yellow is the slightly mustardy yellow required for Star Fleet command shirts, so you've seen it in my Star Trek mani. Shanghai Nights is gorgeous, especially over purple (mani to follow).

Flormar had a 4 for €10,- deal so I picked up the deep classic red M109 (used here), the coral shimmer 08, the nude 124, and the grey M127 I used in last month's tri-polish challenge.

I scored the ones in the bottom picture at a flea markets for crazy good prices. They've all only been swatched. My first butter London, models own and China Glaze polishes! From left to right, they are: Manhattan 97, Manhattan 78C, Models Own Indian Ocean (which you've seen featured as a topper here and here), butter London Scouse and The Black Knight, Jessica 744 Platinum Wishes (never heard of the brand before but it's a lovely fine multi-coloured glitter with blue, green, orange and gold), and China Glaze 1204 Get Carried Away, which is the most unusual topper I have - hard to wear but kinda cool.
There's a beauty blogger flea market this weekend, let's see what I find this time :)

I  succumbed to the draw of Literary Lacquers when I saw the swatches for The Good Parts collection on The Crumpet and on many other blogs and got the fantastic holos If It Pleases You and Laters, Baby. This would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I bought the surprising and mysterious Anny 047 The Answer is Love and got a free mini sample of Dior Diablotine from a Douglas store - I say surprising because despite what you see in the bottle, it is a deep blue with all sorts of red and rust and purple going on on top.

Catrice Mint me up has little gold sparkles in it, which together with the muted mint gives me a sort of art deco feeling.

My sister gave me a bottle of L'Oreal Lush Tangerine that didn't work for her and that I was first only going to use for nail art but since trying it properly, I'm starting to think I should wear orange on my nails.

And finally, experiments with top coats. You've seen the flormar mattifying top coat in action several times already and, though you don't know it, the essence quick dry top coat on pretty much everything else. The essence gel-look top coat does look beautiful but it's so infuriatingly soft! It doesn't matter how long I let it dry, I always ruin it in the end.

Tune in tomorrow for part 2 - the May haul.

The well-stocked nail newbie

Haul März/March 2013

March haul

April is almost half over already, so how about that March haul?
As you can see, the blue phase continues, accompanied by some green and turquoise - and of course my perennial favourites, pink and purple, make an appearance as well.

MaxFactor Max Effect 05 Sunny Pink, 14 Dazzling Blue

You've seen some of these polishes in action and I've already shown you my dotting tools and brushes, which are just barely visible in the foreground. I also bought some "toys" by Essence: a stamping set, a magnetic pen for freestyle magnet patterns, and a "colour changer" polish to go with the nail art pen I bought in January that is supposed to change the colour of the polish. I haven't played with any of these yet though. Oh, and the red pen is cuticle butter.

The toppers

I bought a few cute glitter toppers by Essence:

  • Essence nail art special effect! topper - 10 glorious aquarius and
  • 16 cool breeze (fluoreszierend/fluorescent!)
  • Essence nail art twins reloaded glitter topper - 03 mr big

Blues and greens
  • Astor fashion studio 226 Charleston (used here and here)
  • Catrice 11 Miss Piggy's BF (used here)
  • Layla Ceramic Effect 22
  • Essence special effect topper 10 glorious aquarius
  • MaxFactor Max Effect 14 Dazzling Blue
  • s-he stylezone 285 (used here)
  • p2 color victim 920 up in the air! (used here)

Purples and pinks

  • MaxFactor Max Effect 05 Sunny Pink
  • Essence Twins reloaded 03 Mr Big
  • p2 color victim 950 like a movie star
  • Astor fashion studio 200 (used here)
  • Essence colour and change 04 unexpected galaxy

Nur im Gruppenbild/not shown separately:
  • Essence colour & go 33 Just in case (used and shown here)

It's hard to choose a favourite from these because they're all quite lovely, but the blue MaxFactor polish is something special, as you'll see when I post a nail look using it.

I'd like to say I'll show some self-restraint this month, but I've already bought nearly as many as in March (but could you say no to 5 € Butter London?)

The nail newbie, who really has no self-control (but lots of new polish)

Easter flowers and emeralds

I wanted to show you my Easter mani, which was nothing special, but since there aren't any flowers outside, I'm glad I had one on my nails. I don't know when it last snowed on Easter Sunday but I'm just about done with winter. I like snow, but there's a place and a time.

The base colour here is Astor Fashion Studio No. 200, a lovely lilac creme, which I bought last week together with its sibling 226 Charleston, which is a beautiful shimmery emerald. Unfortunately, these polishes don't have great durability, but the colours are great - Charleston, in particular, is spectacular!

The nail newbie, who may need a few more polishes from this particular collection...

Ahh, England!

a-england haul

I promised you a post about my a-england order a few weeks ago.
First, let me make it absolutely clear that I do not blame Adina of a-england for any of this, she has been nothing but helpful and has provided great customer service and I'd buy from her again in the blink of an eye if I could.
This is a long post, once again, so if you'd rather spare yourself the ranting, you can jump to the last picture, there it's all about nail polish.
a-england - Elaine - The Mythicals Collection

a-england - Princess Tears - The Legend Collection
I don't know if you've heard that the British post has declared nail polish dangerous goods and will not accept it for international delivery anymore (though apparently you can still ship polish into Britain, but then these things never seem entirely logical).
This means that Adina suddenly found herself in the middle of a massive anniversary sale with a slew of orders that she couldn't ship. However, she managed to find forwarding services that shipped her orders from France and the US, and my package arrived after about four weeks. I think that was the best possible way of handling a situation that was beyond her control and I didn't mind the wait at all. Especially for these gorgeous polishes!
Since then, she hasn't been able to accept international orders, but if you think that means you'll never be able to get your hands on a-england polish again, don't worry: here is a list of a-england distributors worldwide - there might even be one in your country.

a-england - Princess Tears - 3 coats

Bridal Veil - The Legend Collection
Despite the sale via distributors, I imagine this change has hurt her and other indie polish producers considerably - and of course British bloggers can no longer send polish abroad (which may not be the same level of threat as for people who make their living from it but still limits their enjoyment).

In the US, international shipping rates just underwent a major hike, hurting many of my etsy friends who had a large international customer base. I know I can't afford to order quite as much anymore. Now, when I say etsy friends, I mean people I shop from. Because I'm not an etsy vendor, partly for the reason that the Austrian postal service nearly doubled international (especially overseas) shipping a couple of years ago.

Dear postal services of the world: Please stop making changes that hurt small indie businesses. Surely you realise you're losing customers that way? Not to mention private customers - I know I think long and hard about sending a package somewhere my parcel service of choice doesn't ship.

a-england - Bridal Veil - 2 coats, no top coat

When I posted my first a-england swatch, I said I'd edit my rant but you know what? I still feel this way. But that's enough of that: Enjoy the beauty of a-england.

a-england - King Arthur - The Mythicals Collection

Morgan Le Fay, Avalon, Tristam... will haben!

a-england - Merlin - The Mythicals Collection

a-england has four collections with great backstories from English myth and literature:
Gothic Beauties, featuring conflicted literary characters such as Jane Eyre, Ophelia, and Dorian Grey. I want all of these, but especially Ophelia and Jane Eyre.

The Legend, the story of St. George and the dragon. I have two of these now, the gorgeous Princess Tears and Bridal Veil, which I've already shown you and I must have both St. George and Dragon. Possibly Ascalon as well.
The Mythicals, inspired by the legend of King Arthur. I have three of these: Elaine, King Arthur and Merlin. Elaine is a dusky purple creme, King Arthur a gunmetal silver (if that's a thing) and Merlin is a silver topper. The latter two came as a pair. I'm sure there's a Merlin shipper joke in there somewhere. I need so many of these, it's not even funny. Avalon, Tristam, Morgan Le Fay... someone stop me.
Heavenly Quotes is a new line and features famous quotes from literature and poetry (all English, I assume). She Walks in Beauty is lovely.
With all this gushing I feel obliged to mention this is not a sponsored post (I never do them), I'm just really happy with the polish I ordered and can't wait to get my fingers on more of the stuff.

The enthusiastic nail newbie

Euer sehr begeistertes Nagelnewbie

Haul Februar/February 2013

February's haul is not too shabby. All those sales and my growing addiction... I regret nothing.

You've seen a few of these already and some will get their own posts (a-england for one), but here's an overview.

Orly Sunglasses at Night & Orly Lunar Eclipse:

There are no words to describe how much I adore these two. I saw Sunglasses at Night on Jettie & Lena's blog and just had to have it. What can I say, I'm a child of the 80s. I ordered them online and got them pretty quickly. I had to add Lunar Eclipse so the sunglasses wouldn't be lonely and to get the most out of the shipping costs and of course so I could wear that awesome pinkish blue on my nails.
Next up are various sale items by store brands iQ cosmetics and LOOK. Look at all those colors!

So viele schöne Farben!

These pictures really show that I'm in the middle of a blue period that would make Picasso faint.

Here you've got miscellaneous polishes. I showed you the Colorama and Gosh polishes in a previous post. The blue Nola was on sale as well, and I needed the white one for nail art.

As I mentioned, a-england will be getting its own post, but here's the haul (which I ordered in January so it totally doesn't count). Left to right:

Merlin, King Arthur, Bridal Veil, Elaine, Princess Tears.

And finally, I ordered a couple of things from Douglas. And when I say "a couple", I mean that literally. Guess which items in the above picture I paid for?
Not the massive tub of Frédéric Fekkai styling wax, that's for sure. It was free with any order and was my incentive to place the order. I'd had the Nyx Girl polish in Emerald Forest on my wishlist for a while so the wax was really just a good excuse to finally get it ;)
I have a pixie cut so gel and wax are the only hair styling products I use. The wax is fine, forms well, does everything it should. However, it smells faintly of dill, which is just plain weird and makes me crave fish. It dissipates after a while, but it's quite distracting. It's hard to feel attractive when you feel like a lunch plate at Ikea. (My sister says it only smells of wax and playdough, so your mileage may vary.)

I recently saw great pictures of Emerald Forest on black with an extra glitter topper, I'll have to do that sometime soon!

Und was habt ihr so gekauft?
Euer ok vielleicht ein bisschen shoppingsüchtiges Nagelnewbie

And what did you get in February?
The maybe just a little bit shopaholic nail newbie

Oops... Haul

You know how this one goes.
If you've read my Cirque du Soleil post, you know I've got a few new nail polishes. Well, I say "a few"...
So here's what happened. I'd run out of shower cream. And then this happened. Yeah, oops.

LOOK Satin finish compact powder - Nr. 2 Cameo

Okay, so maybe I wasn't quite that innocent. I was well aware that Bipa (an Austrian drugstore) had a -15% deal on makeup and wanted to grab some powder, blush and maybe a bottle of nail polish.
But then there was this bargain bin. LOOK polishes were €1 and iQ Cosmetics polishes were €3 (both are store brands) so what was I to do? And since they had that -15% deal I practically had to buy a few regularly priced polishes too. Anything else would've been quite irresponsible.

But let's start with the glaring omission in the first picture: no blush. I guess they'd been robbed or something because I couldn't find a suitable blush to save my life. Well, I got a brush and a nail file instead and snagged the last powder. And my new favorite shower cream. Florena is a former GDR brand that is still very popular in Germany and has made it to Austria as well. This one's with olive oil and moisturizes my skin wonderfully and - always important for little miss sensitive - has a very mild and inoffensive smell.

Right, okay, I know this is what you've all been waiting for: Nail polish! Lots of it!

As you can see I grabbed a whole lot of LOOK. Most are from the bargain bin, except for the black, which I needed as an undie for the Orly Sunglasses at Night I ordered (squee!) and other toppers, and the "green changer", which I've been lusting after for a while, a wonderful gold/green duochrome. Mystic is a really dark purple and I think the rest speak for themselves.

So tolle Farben!

Also from the bargain bin we have iQ Nail Attraction in 8 violet, then a wonderful minty green from the new iQ colour flash collection, and finally - most definitely not from the bargain bin - my two favorites, Maybelline Colorama in 661 Ocean Blue and Gosh in 540 Ocean. Amazing colors! You may remember those two from my Cirque du Soleil mani.

Euer völlig kontrolliert einkaufendes Nagelnewbie

I had to try the Gosh polish right away. I'd say the brand is aptly named. The color is just gorgeous! I couldn't quite get the color to show in the photos, it's a bit less light blue and more turquoise than in the picture, with a slight colorshift.

So yeah, that was my accidental little haul. I'd say I'm planning to avoid any more accidents but I still need that blush, don't I?

"I won't have much to show this month," I told myself, "I still have plenty of most of my skincare products and I've got a bunch of polishes to play around with, besides, I won that package from Ciindey." Okay, so a-england had an irresistible sale and I had to see what all the fuss was about (still waiting for those to arrive, that's why they're not in the picture). And I finally found the sort of purple eyeshadow I was looking for (Astor Eye Artist in 615 - Smokey purple). But honestly, up until about a week ago, my January haul was completely harmless.

But then I had to go and try nail art and realize that I need a few tools and maybe a few more staple colors. Yellow and orange for rainbows, say.

So I went to the drugstore and bought a few cheap nail liners and yellow polish.

And then I went to this other store and found a few more things that I really really needed. And my nail polish remover was empty. And then I went to another drugstore to buy night cream and they had stuff on sale.

But why am I telling you this, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean...

Let's have a look at all this stuff then... For nail art (pic above), I got LOOK nail liner in 1 black und 2 white, b.pretty nail liner in 4 pink, an essence nail art designer set consisting of sponges and a very fine brush, the awesome glittery nail liner on the left and something that I just had to buy because it sounded so cool: "colour and change magic effect designer" by essence, which is supposed to change the color of the polish on which it is applied. I haven't tried it yet, though, because I had a bit of a reading fail there: it only works on a special kind of polish. Duh.

"regular" polishes - die "normalen" Lacke

Normale Lacke von links nach rechts / Regular polishes, left to right:
b.pretty (25 yellow), catrice (C02 For Bright Guys - Limited Edition NEONaturals), flormar supershine miracle colors (U03), Isadora Wonder Nail (751 Arctic Treasure) (hier verwendet/used here), s-he (340) (hier geswatched/swatched here)

I also got a catrice Quick Dry & High Shine Top Coat, a sample of  inglot's nail polish remover and a bottle of "essence nail art nail polish remover ultra", which removes the polish with just one or two swipes. I think I've found my nail polish remover of choice.
Then there's just my alverde night cream and a shine spray. I keep my hair really short so I don't really use any other hair product than gel and shine sprays, but I do love those.

So yeah, this ended up being quite a haul after all... let's see how February goes ;)

The unable-to-resist-shiny-stuff nail newbie
