This is what happens when I write drafts. They languish in the limbo of unpublished posts for what seems like an eternity just because I can't get off my behind and add pictures or do whatever else needs to be done to publish them. But here you go!

Right, so I mentioned a failed experiment with ombre nails the other day. Here's the shocking evidence. (At this point I'm hoping you'll look at the picture above and say to yourself "what's she on about? That's not so terrible". Though it's quite possible you'll nod to yourself and say "yeah, that's a bit of a failboat right there". Either way, prepare for something worse. That above is a picture of the second attempt, to ensure you see it before you run screaming.)

A few days before Christmas, I was trying to recreate a look from Cessa Goes Beauty, ombre with glitter. It's technically supposed to be done with a sponge, but as I didn't have one at hand and she did it with q-tips too, I tried it that way. I decided to go with Christmas colors, maybe even use it as a fancy Christmas manicure (we all know how that worked out).

My first problem was that I didn't have enough suitable shades of red.

My second problem was that I didn't have gold glitter.

My third problem was that I am a bit of a klutz. No, actually that's my first problem. And that I had no idea what I was doing.

So I did this.

I used too much nail polish and let it dry too much before applying the next color, so they didn't exactly blend well. It also looks like I applied the first layer with a q-tip as well, but that's just because the bottom layer is such a light pink that it doesn't show properly (and because I didn't leave enough of it visible).

And then, because I figured it'd all look better once I applied the gold (in my experience, everything looks better with  glitter), I decided to improvise and make little golden (well, technically bronze, but you can see I was a bit flexible with colors here) dots instead of the glitter I didn't have. Made those with a pencil tip dipped in nail polish.
What can I say, they look like a fairy threw up on a toadstool.

But enough with the self-deprecation, because I'm actually quite pleased with my second attempt. It's all about learning from your mistakes, right?
I still didn't have a sponge (and I am so getting one cause I like the look of properly sponge-applied polish), but I used a lighter hand with the q-tips, had coordinating colors that I used moderately and didn't let dry too much, and - yay! - had glitter. That went a lot better.

Euer lernendes Nagelnewbie

And because I'm so pleased with these (though of course there's plenty of room for improvement), I'm posting this in The Crumpet's Amateur Nail Art Contest. I was going to post it in the January contest but there was an issue with the linky so now I'll post this in anticipation of the February contest. It's for non-bloggers and for bloggers with less than 50 followers. The prizes are fame and glory and the pleasure of seeing lots of amazing nail art from amateurs just like me (well, amateurs a lot better than me if I'm honest, so I have something to aspire to). Go have a look - The Crumpet is well worth reading.

Pre-Spring Challenge, days 3 and 4

I'm participating in my first nail art challenge! Polish Alcoholic & Mommy Loves Nail Polish have put together a fun pre-spring challenge with lots of spring prompts for your nails. Read all about it here.
I decided that sounded like fun and while I won't have time to participate each day, I'll play when I have time. And since it's okay to post pictures to the linky collections retroactively, I did manis for days 3 and 4 last night while watching Top Model. (Looking for days 1 and 2? Good luck with that, it's all a bit wibbly wobbly timey wimey.)

Go look at those collections, they're awesome! I'm just doing my little experimenting thing here so mine aren't very spectacular but I'm getting a lot of inspiration from others' work.

Day 3: Green

2 layers of MUA Nail Varnish in shade 13 crossed by a freehand diagonal in S-HE in shade 314. I was going for a heraldic look, which worked, but I definitely need a) tape and/or b) some sort of nail art tool, it's much too messy with the brush.

Day 4: Flowers

A one-layer background in b pretty (shade 21 - "lime green", which it, while pretty, is plainly not), with freehand flowers in two shades of pink Boulevard de Beauté (16 and 21) that just arrived at my door yesterday as a contest prize (more on that soon!). I like them, but c) dotting tool has to happen.

What I've learned so far:
- I like challenges and prompts
- Participating in challenges leads to me wanting needing more tools of the trade
- My main problem with challenges like these is that I have to remove my mani again the next day or sooner. It gives me the freedom to experiment but at the same time I'll also be removing manis that took ages and look great. Besides, I hate removing polish ;)

The learning-by-doing Nail Newbie

Holo-magnetic nails: Silver bubbles

Heute will ich euch meine Silvesternägel zeigen.

The holidays are over, it was back to work for me this week and suddenly it's much harder to blog regularly - which means I have several things to show you.

Today I want to show you my New Year's nails.
I decided to combine magnetic and holographic nail polishes. On top of a clear base coat, I applied a thin layer of MUA Magnetic Nails in King's Road - a shimmery silver-grey - and used the magnet in the bottle top to make concentric circles.

It seems you have to apply a really thin layer of that to get a good result. The circles aren't quite in the same positions on the nails but that's my fault. As you can see above, the thin layer of varnish doesn't quite provide full coverage, but since I was planning to add a layer of holo anyway, it didn't matter to me.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to find a good balance between a thick enough layer and clearly visible magnetic effects if you were to use just a layer of the magnetic polish.

Euer kreatives Nagelnewbie

After the magnetic polish had dried, I applied a layer of holographic polish (Look by Bipa Special Effect in No. 3 - Metallic hologram) and a clear top coat.
The result is a sparkly holographic effect with flecks of silver, green, yellow and blue with circles that are only visible from some angles, making them seem like an optical illusion.
I was very happy with the result and it lasted well - when I removed it after three days, I had just begun to see the first signs of wear.

Have you ever combined holographic and magnetic polishes? I'm sure I haven't exactly invented the wheel here ;)

Snap, crackle, pop!

On Thursday I used my new MUA polishes to create my first crackle look.
The base color (photographed here for swatching purposes as well): MUA Nail Varnish in "Pistachio Ice Cream" - a nice icy green, though more minty than pistachioy (is that a word?), not that I mind.

Benötigt für volle Deckung zwei Lagen. Trocknet recht schnell.

Requires two layers for full coverage, dries pretty quickly. Unfortunately the brush had several hairs standing off in various directions, which made it hard to get a smooth surface. I'm glad I only intended this as a background color. To be fair though, this was the only one of the five varnishes from that line that had this issue, the other brushes are perfectly fine, as well as the Magnetic and Quake varnishes I've swatched so far, so this is likely just a fluke.

Euer science-fiction-reptilienhaftes Nagelnewbie

Next I applied one layer of MUA Nail Quake in "Broken Arrow". As mentioned above, this is my first experience with crackle polish and I was completely fascinated by watching it crackle while drying. The colour is somewhere between these two pictures (with and without flash).
I like the result. It's got a bit of a science fiction reptile thing going on, which in my books is a good thing ;)

I'm pretty sold on crackle polish after this look. With my six different shades of Quake, I've got a ton of possible color combos.

Ho-Ho-Ho-Haul

In my haul post, I mentioned I had a nailpolish order from MUA coming. It arrived on Monday - I'd say Christmas came early, except, well, it actually was Christmas. Technically, I knew there were 14 in that order, but actually seeing them all together was a bit overwhelming...it practically doubled my stash.

I'll post more about these polishes later, but left to right in the top row are a bottle of Glitter Nail Quake, the five non-glittery Nail Quakes that I got for free, and three bottles from their Magnetic Nails line. The front row consists of five bottles of their regular and economical Nail Varnish series. I showed you the one on the far right yesterday and I've done a bit of swatching with some of the others, but I'm sure I'll be pretty busy with these for a while. I'm sure at least one of these will end up on my nails for New Year's Eve.

Das war also Weihnachten - So that was Christmas

Euer faules Nagelnewbie

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and had fun and good food and no stress (this also goes for everyone who doesn't celebrate a holiday during this time - you can't go wrong with fun, food and no stress.)

My Christmas was pleasant as always. I celebrated on the 24th and the 25th with my closest family, talking and having fun. Today I relaxed on the couch, watched movies and ate leftovers from the holiday meal - a bit of a tradition as well ;) Unfortunately we didn't get a white Christmas although it looked promising on Sunday morning when it started snowing... but who knows, maybe it'll snow for New Year's.

The above vaguely Christmassy nails are with MUA Nail Varnish in shade 14 - more on MUA tomorrow!
