Weiße Blumen (Gewinnspielbeitrag) / White flowers (contest entry)

Dear readers,
It's another double post day today and for the first time in quite a while I'm posting in German and English again. It's twice the work and I've been hard pressed to get my daily posts up in just one language during the OMD 31 day challenge, but I figure when things slow down a bit (there's no way I'll be able to keep up the daily posting pace) I'll have more bilingual posts again - especially posts that are about subscription boxes and TV shows and other things that are of specific interest to my Austrian and German readers.

This first post (which will be followed by one of my favourite OMD designs) is my entry for the blogiversary contest of Faralalia of Feel the beauty inside. The actual blogiversary was a while back but she's now running a contest for her readers. There is one random draw prize for comments but more importantly, there's two creative challenges. You probably won't be surprised to hear I picked the nail design challenge.

Was meint ihr?

The challenge was to recreate one of her monthly manicures (which she gets done at a studio). I chose this design from November 2011. It was quite a challenge because my hand isn't as steady as that of a professional nail artist (and the original was probably done with acrylics), but I think it came out quite pretty. How do you like it?

I started with two very thin layers of Essie Marshmallow and dabbed a bit of a-England Merlin on the tips.

Next I painted the blue wavy shapes in Different Dimension Just keep swimming and framed them with LOOK nail tattoo liner white. I used a dotting tool for the dots, the rest is all done with brushes.

For the flowers, I mixed the Essie and Look polishes to achieve a nearly opaque white that had the silky sheen of petals. Finally I added a drop of blue to the white mixture and dabbed it in the centre of the flowers.

Just keep swimming is holographic. You can see it on the side of the thumb, but I guess you need larger areas for the holo to show properly. The main reason I picked it was that it's such a gorgeous bright blue even in the shade (which isn't very common in holos).

Ich hoffe, euch gefällt dieses Design! Alles Liebe,
das Nagelnewbie

I hope you like this look! Yours,
the nail newbie

All Tomorrow's Parties

When I hear "indie", my first thought is always music. That's the context in which I first heard the expression, and indie rock has accompanied me since my teens. So when I saw Kayla Shevonne was holding an indie polish contest, I knew my design would incorporate indie music in some way.

Now there are lots of definitions of what constitutes indie music, some stricter than others, but I chose to pay homage to the following artists, who mean a lot to me:

The Velvet Underground, represented by Andy Warhol's famous banana*, because they were indie before the word even existed.

Radiohead, represented by their bear logo, because they certainly sound indie and self-publishing In Rainbows as a pay-as-you-wish download was a very indie thing to do.

Morrissey, because he essentially is indie music. He also, sadly, does not have a simple logo or album cover I could use, so he got a portrait based on this photo.

The guitar and LP represent all the rest: the sound, the creativity, the live shows, the ratty band t-shirts, the muddy festivals, and the uncounted timeless hours I've spent in record shops looking for old rarities and new releases.

These pictures show off the lovely glitter and holo of the polishes best.
The photo props are some of my treasures - yes, I still own mix tapes. Not many, but there are some that I just cannot part with, even if I've parted ways with the people who made them for me a long time ago.

I used a-england Princess Tears for the background, a-england Elaine for the art, and a dash of Literary Lacquers Laters, Baby for the guitar strings and the record label. If you want to join the contest, you can enter until 30 April on Nails by Kayla Shevonne. (I'd recommend checking out her blog in any case to see her great nail art and tutorials!)

I hope you enjoyed my (once again very literal) take on the theme!

Fairy Tales I

I don't know if you've noticed but I love challenges. I enjoy having a theme and going crazy with it and then seeing what ideas other people had. I'm not fussed there's a prize for it or not, but it makes me all giddy if people like my design.
Today's theme is fairy tales. I'm not sure how well this one's known outside Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

a-england Bridal Veil
Cherry Bomb, a German blogger, is celebrating 100 followers with a contest (more info at the end of this post) - I think that's so much more fun than just a raffle, I think I'll do that too if sometime in the future I have enough readers. Anyway, the topic is fairy tales and you can do pretty much anything beauty-related: makeup, hair, nails, etc. I picked nail art, no surprise there ;)

I was really inspired by the theme and painted  several different looks - you'll get to see them all soon - but I liked this one best.
It's based on one of the lesser-known Brothers Grimm stories - I don't think this one ever made it into the translations. It's your basic moral story where a poor orphan girl gives away her last loaf of bread and her clothes to people who need them more, and in the end she even gives her shift to a cold child, and then suddenly stars start falling from the sky and turn into gold coins and she's suddenly wearing a soft new linen dress and catches the coins in it.
I always thought it was rather cute though - and as morals go, this one is pretty harmless compared to most other fairy tales...

I started with a-england Bridal Veil, which is a great matte black with microglitter. Then I decided I wanted more of a starry skies look and added two coats of Viva la Diva in No. 70 (I need to tell you a bit more about that one soon).

Next I drew the girl using my cheapo white, yellow and pinks, and dabbed on IsaDora Wonder Nail Arctic Treasure as falling stars/gold.

I like how it turned out, with just the one accent nail to tell the story and the magical glitter on all the other nails. I tend to be pretty literal in my interpretations and I'm telling you, this is the least literal of all my fairy tale nails ;)

März, also noch zwei Wochen. Alle Infos gibt's beim Klick auf diesen Link.

A few word's on Cherry Bomb's contest (disclaimer: may not be international):

She's giving away everything you need for an "ice princess" daytime look that she did and she will be presenting the top 3 participants' blogs on her blog. Since I've only recently started following her blog and I'm actually not even sure it's open internationally, I'm not entering for the makeup prize, but maybe a few people will like my nail look and find my blog. So if she decides she wants to feature my blog, I'd be thrilled!

Cirque du Soleil

Update: Seht alle Beiträge hier / View all entries here.

This look was inspired by Cirque du Soleil's Varekai show. It's an entry for a "Circus"-themed contest held by http://missxtravaganz.blogspot.com. Even if you don't read German I recommend having a look at her amazing looks and photography (check the tabs at the top as well). Read on for more information (now updated with daylight pictures).

Offizielle Einreichung / my official entry (complete with typo)

without top coat, artificial light

I've been sick in bed for a few days and was surfing the net, as you do, when I came upon the blog and the contest. I guess I was feeling pretty inspired after seeing all those amazing looks on Missy's blog so when I saw the challenge was to create a "Circus" look, I knew I had to do something on my nails and I knew it had to be Cirque du Soleil.
The contest is for eye makeups, whole looks, nail art, and you could even do bodypainting if you wanted (I hope someone does!) - and she told her readers to interpret the topic to be "colorful, happy, maybe even creepy or fairy tale-like". Well, I think this puts me solidly in the creepy category.

lurking... (with top coat, daylight)

well, I think this justifies my haul - I'm using them

I've loved the circus since I was a kid. We'd go there once a year and it was the absolute highlight of the year. We went to "classic" circuses with animals and clowns and sometimes to the Chinese circus (I don't like animal acts anymore, but I still like going to the Chinese circus). Three years back I saw Cirque du Soleil's "Varekai" and was mesmerized. I felt like a child again, gaping in wonder and getting sucked into that world of magic and fantasy. Varekai is a story set in a forest full of strange creatures... and one of them was my inspiration.

I see you... (with top coat, daylight)

with top coat, daylight
I already had Gosh in Ocean on my nails (my new favorite and part of a haul that I haven't shown you yet, like half the colors in the picture.)
With a sponge, I applied a little dark blue Maybelline Colorama (Ocean Blue) onto my thumb, pinky and middle finger. The red "crest" on the middle finger is a mix of the red Boulevard de Beauté (No. 7) and the orange Catrice (For Bright Guys - it's more orange than in that photo), applied with the one of the edges of the sponge. While that was drying, I drew the white and red part of the eyes with my fine brush (nail art with eye makeup, that's a new one for me).
I then mixed the blue Colorama with the black LOOK polish and applied it with the sponge to make the ridges on the sides. I also did lighter ridges on the pinky and thumb - the "legs". I added an additional layer of blue sponging though to make them less prominent. You can just make them out on my thumb here.

Then I added a tiny bit of pink (Catrice Karl Says Très Chic) into the sides of the eyes and painted the black eyeliner, eyebrow and pupil, and finally I made a subtle ombrè using LOOK in crystal sky and the white nail art liner and applied it below the eyes with my sponge.

(Edit: Ist hiermit geschehen. Hab die anderen zum Vergleich dringelassen.)

with top coat, daylight

The initial pics in this post (which I've since edited to add pictures and text) as well as my contest entry were taken in the middle of the night so they're in artificial light and prior to applying a top coat - the top coat smudged Andy a bit in the Valentine's mani and I didn't want to risk that happening here.
The topcoat was fine though, so now there's shiny daylight pictures too.

What do you think? To me, the mani doesn't really scream "circus", clowns or tightrope walkers would be better for that, but I really like how this turned out. It's definitely creepier than clowns though (unless you're creeped out by clowns, of course).

And that's enough of me posting while sick, time to watch some stupid TV, which, as we all know, is just what the doctor ordered ;) (Though I'm definitely feeling better already, seeing as I'm able to do midnight manis and post on my blog...)

The definitely recovering nail newbie
