That's Dread Cthulhu to you.

I'm not having a very good day. I'm frustrated, depressed and bored, a combination that usually leads to bad decisions, like eating so much chocolate I get sick, ranting on the Internet or summoning Great Old Ones.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.

Sorry about that, world. Enjoy your final moments of freedom with some nail art.

The light green background looked so yellow I tried grey & white instead. Nah. Bring on the sickly green of R'lyeh.

The Raven (OMD challenge day 8: matte)

Dear readers,

Time is all out of wonk here at casa de nail newbie! Just yesterday, we had day 26 of the OMD challenge - and now it's day 8? Timey wimey much? I guess that explains the blue police box I saw in my kitchen earlier. Also, my custard is gone.

Right. All readers who aren't Doctor Who fans, I apologise. A bit. I have reasons! It's Saturday and I'm feeling fine, I've got time to drink coffee at my leasure, my vacation starts next week and I'm going to see Leonard Cohen tonight. So forgive me if I seem excessively bouncy. I promise you my mani won't be.

So back on topic: Because I'm still wearing yesterday's underwater mani and can't bring myself to remove it even for the Leonard Cohen nail art I'd planned, I'm skipping today's jewelry theme on the OMD challenge and posting something for matte day instead, which I missed.

I've sung the praises of LynBDesigns Quoth the Raven (Bro You Cray Cray) before, but it really deserved to get its own post, given my fondness of Poe and ravens in general. I'll just go ahead and quote myself on the description of the polish:
This is deliciously thick and dark like the blood of some monster from Poe's imagination, black like the deepest night and a witch's cat. It's perfect for nail art - not too thick, not too liquid. On it's own, it's a two-coater. You might manage with one thick coat but why get one longer-drying coat when you can do it in two thinner and faster-drying ones? This polish dries to a semi-matte finish.

I made it fully matte for this nail art and then painted ravens on the thumb and ring finger with a glossy top coat. I like the one in flight better, the one on the thumb has a bit of a puffin beak, but I didn't notice that at the time. I then decided to add something to the other nails too and chose a design heavily inspired by this gorgeous mani by Copy That, Copy Cat.

It was really hot that day so I've got bubbles - but that's caused by the matte top coat, not Quoth the Raven, as you can see in the bubble-free picture of the polish on its own. I had some difficulty applying the polish evenly, but I'm not sure whether that's the polish or operator error. I know I've seen lots of very smooth swatches of it. It's definitely a polish I'd buy again!

May Tri-Polish challenge, day 4: One fish, two fish...

... red fish, blue fish. The fourth and last manicure for the May Tri-Polish Challenge is again inspired by a classic – a classic children’s book this time. Do you know Dr. Seuss of The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, and Horton Hears a Who? I don’t think they’re that well known in languages other than English, but if you can get your hands on them, have a look – they’re funny, whimsical and utterly charming. Here's my inspiration picture.

For this mani I used all three colours as well as white and black. You may see some sparkle in the two fish – that was an attempt at making them look a bit greener, like in the book, by adding gold. I didn’t like it though so I went over it once more with grey.

I'll leave you with a few more pictures of the fish.
I enjoyed my first Tri-Polish challenge a lot and am looking forward to June’s. If you want to play too, go here for all you need to know about the challenge.

Covered in bees

Background: Astor Fashion Studio Charleston (226)

Today's look is from Wednesday, made for a very special occasion: British comedian Eddie Izzard was in Austria for the - as far as I'm aware - first time ever and I managed to get tickets for the show before it sold out.
If you don't know who Eddie Izzard is, don’t feel bad - there will be enough links in this post to remedy that, starting with the one that explains this mani and the title of this post: Check him out talking about beekeepers and romance at the workplace.
I love pretty much all his stuff but this is one of my favourites. What can I say, I like my Eddie like I like my nails: covered in beeeeeeeeeees! (Even if they're throwbacks to the flying amoeba stage of evolution.)

Bees: b.pretty 25 yellow, LOOK white & black
Do you have a flag?

But the beekeeping thing isn't all that's going on in this mani - of course I also had to have a flag. And seeing as there (sadly) aren't very many countries around that have bees on their flags, I am flying the flag of Illian on my thumb: nine golden bees on a field of green. (This is from the excellent Wheel of Time fantasy books. Yeah, mixing all my favourites in this mani!)

This isn't the first time bees have been involved in my mani, as you may recall or may have seen in the Sherlock mani linked above, and it won't be the last, because bees are awesome. They have a language and they're even capable of logic and deductive reasoning, which may explain why Sherlock Holmes was so into them. Also, as we know from Doctor Who, they are aliens and they are disappearing. (The latter is, unfortunately, true and a very serious issue. The former may be true as well.)

But back to Eddie Izzard. If you liked the two sketches above, I’d also recommend his history of Christianity (including a great rendition of Sean Connery as Henry VIII): Link

And to close with a nail polish angle: His nail art is better than mine. A minor point next to his fantastic talents as an entertainer, but this being a nail blog, I think it should not go unmentioned. Because he is just awesome.

Danke für die tolle Show, Eddie!

Fairy tales III

Here's another one of my fairy tale looks - I think this would have actually gone best with the princess theme and Cherry Bomb's ice princess look, but I didn't like how the 3rd and 4th fingers turned out.

As you may have guessed from the rose and the spindle, I picked Sleeping Beauty. I started with two layers of LOOK in (truly fabulous light blue) crystal sky (No. 31). Then I did the castle towers in LOOK flimsy (No. 101), a sort of taupe, and added structure with a-england King Arthur.

After that had dried, I drew the vines in green and splotched about with the various reds and pinks for the roses. (I hope that with my new set of dotting tools and brushes my next attempt at roses on a wall will look a bit better.)

Und was kommt dabei raus?

The spindle is LOOK special effect bronze changer (Nr. 10) because I didn't have brown at the time and the yarn is just my usual LOOK nail liner, which I forgot to include in the group picture.

I'd love to tell you I had some kind of awesome technique, but really I just winged it (don't I always?), layering ever smaller shapes in different shades on top of each other. I like it a lot more than the castle...

Fairy tales II

Here is another example of my fairy tale-inspired nail art. I don't think this needs any explanation - Little Red Riding Hood rides again.

This was the first design I came up with for the fairy tale challenge. I have no idea why I picked Little Red Riding Hood, but I had fun doing it. This also inspired me to do another look, which isn't strictly speaking a fairy tale but still sort of feels like one... well, you'll see.

Fairy Tales I

I don't know if you've noticed but I love challenges. I enjoy having a theme and going crazy with it and then seeing what ideas other people had. I'm not fussed there's a prize for it or not, but it makes me all giddy if people like my design.
Today's theme is fairy tales. I'm not sure how well this one's known outside Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

a-england Bridal Veil
Cherry Bomb, a German blogger, is celebrating 100 followers with a contest (more info at the end of this post) - I think that's so much more fun than just a raffle, I think I'll do that too if sometime in the future I have enough readers. Anyway, the topic is fairy tales and you can do pretty much anything beauty-related: makeup, hair, nails, etc. I picked nail art, no surprise there ;)

I was really inspired by the theme and painted  several different looks - you'll get to see them all soon - but I liked this one best.
It's based on one of the lesser-known Brothers Grimm stories - I don't think this one ever made it into the translations. It's your basic moral story where a poor orphan girl gives away her last loaf of bread and her clothes to people who need them more, and in the end she even gives her shift to a cold child, and then suddenly stars start falling from the sky and turn into gold coins and she's suddenly wearing a soft new linen dress and catches the coins in it.
I always thought it was rather cute though - and as morals go, this one is pretty harmless compared to most other fairy tales...

I started with a-england Bridal Veil, which is a great matte black with microglitter. Then I decided I wanted more of a starry skies look and added two coats of Viva la Diva in No. 70 (I need to tell you a bit more about that one soon).

Next I drew the girl using my cheapo white, yellow and pinks, and dabbed on IsaDora Wonder Nail Arctic Treasure as falling stars/gold.

I like how it turned out, with just the one accent nail to tell the story and the magical glitter on all the other nails. I tend to be pretty literal in my interpretations and I'm telling you, this is the least literal of all my fairy tale nails ;)

März, also noch zwei Wochen. Alle Infos gibt's beim Klick auf diesen Link.

A few word's on Cherry Bomb's contest (disclaimer: may not be international):

She's giving away everything you need for an "ice princess" daytime look that she did and she will be presenting the top 3 participants' blogs on her blog. Since I've only recently started following her blog and I'm actually not even sure it's open internationally, I'm not entering for the makeup prize, but maybe a few people will like my nail look and find my blog. So if she decides she wants to feature my blog, I'd be thrilled!

Super Bowl Mani

So, Super Bowl tonight. I'll be honest, I normally only watch "proper" football (that sport some people insist on calling soccer) ;). American football is a niche sport here, but the sports channels do broadcast the big games. And since my friends are having a Super Bowl party and I'm sure it will be a blast and I've heard so much about the show and the ads, I guess they'll have to explain the rules to me.

2 coats + top coat
The beer's in the fridge, we'll be making hot dogs, potato wedges and pancakes (which may not be traditional Super Bowl food but are so tasty!) and we'll be up all night because of time zones - the game doesn't start until after midnight here. (Good thing I can sleep in tomorrow.)
One of the girls is even bringing face paints so we can go all out. Which of course means I had to at least pick a team! Not the criteria I usually use to decide which team to support, but seeing as I don't know enough about the game to pick based on skill and since I have no particular preference for either city, I went with their colors and names. (Of course, if you're American, you probably know which one I picked from the first photo.)

I probably don't have to explain this to US readers, but other international readers: In case you're as ignorant about American football as me, the teams playing in the Super Bowl (the NFL finals) tonight are the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Fun fact: Their coaches are brothers. If you want to know a bit more than that, I can recommend the NFL's "The Casual Fan's Super Bowl Guide", which is quite entertaining.

John Tenniel - illustration for "The Raven" (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

The decision itself was pretty easy:
  • Team colors: Ravens are purple, 49ers are red. I love purple.
  • Logo: The 49ers have an oval that says "SF", the Ravens have a raven's head with a "B" in it. That is a lot cooler.
And finally the strongest argument - the origin of the names:
  • The 49ers are named after the people who came to California during the 1849 California Gold Rush. That's pretty cool. But the Ravens are named after Edgar Allan Poe's poem (Poe lived in Baltimore for a while and is buried there). Sorry, gold prospectors, you're cool and all - but dude, Edgar Allan Poe! It just doesn't get a lot more awesome than that.

No question, then: Go Ravens!

Daher also ganz klar: Go Ravens!
