Hey, you! Yes, you. Wanna buy some polish?

Seriously, this is just a preview. There's more!

Dear readers,
let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved to paint her nails. She enjoyed combining different polishes, making nail art, and buying new polish. She even blogged about it.
But then one day she realised she had used only two polishes for the last four months. She didn’t have time for nail art anymore, and the sight of the polishes in her drawer now filled her with anxiety, not pleasure.

With a heavy heart, she decided to sell some of her polishes. She kept a few, but the others she posted on her blog for sale so that others might give them a better home.

Yes, I’m having a blog sale. Yes, there’s tons of awesome, once-swatched indies up for grabs (and even a few unopened ones). There’s also some commercial high-end and drugstore polishes, and some polishes that have been used more than a few times. These will be clearly marked and priced lower.

Buying more gets you cheaper polishes: Buy 5, get the 6th one (of equal or lower value) free, buy 10 and you get 3 (of equal or lower value) free. If you’re buying more than that, I’ll be sure to throw in some extras!

Prices are in Euro, but since payment is via Paypal, you don’t have to worry about that – you can set it to pay in € and it will apply its conversion rate and charge you in your home currency.

Shipping is from Austria, so it’s a great opportunity for Europeans to get some of those indie polishes without customs and with cheaper shipping. I’ll be in Germany in early July and can post packages from there at domestic rates for Germans (and cheaper rates for others than from Austria), same with the UK in late July.
Overseas shipping, however, is pretty expensive, but might be worth it for out-of-stock polishes, that’s up to you.

The first part of the blog sale (indie polishes) will be going up today, the second part (high-end commercial and drugstore polishes) probably tomorrow. You can reserve items for 72 hours.

But now let’s get back to the story, because there is a happy end.
Our heroine decided she’d just use the polishes left over for a while and see if she felt like blogging. She wasn’t done with nail art completely, she felt, just waiting for inspiration.

Love,
Captain Spacenails

NAIL linkup challenge: Red (and giveaway winner)

Hi!
Today's post is a bit of a hodge-podge of several things: Nail art, giveaway winner and a few words about modeling contests.

I've been seriously off my game in the regular nail art department - it's either something huge and crazy or nothing at all. My last attempts at dotting and sponging turned out disgusting. That and the lack of time are the reasons I haven't been contributing to all the great challenges going around this year. But finally it's time!

Here's my contribution to the Nail Art Ideas Linkup challenge for this week: Red. This challenge is hosted by Craftynail, Brijit's Digits and Eeek! Nail polish! and there's a different theme every week.

I made what is apparently called a "waterfall" mani with a bunch of red polishes. It was fun and easy to make and made me feel better about my nail art. Make sure to check out the other contributions in the linky below!

Red :

Next, my giveaway winner. I drew a name early this week using the highly sophisticated method of a list (first the original post, then the reminder post, in the order of commenting) and a randomizer. The lucky winner was Alice Beerland, who has already replied to my mail and chose the beauty package. Congratulations again! I've added a few small extra surprises for you and I'll get it to the post office next week.

I hope you all enjoyed getting to know my blog (if you didn't already).

And now a bit of a warning: You'll be seeing more than the usual number of German posts here for the next couple of months because it's that time of the year again - Germany's Next Top Model (a knockoff of America's NTM, hosted by Heidi Klum) has started.

I know, I know, it's all staged, the model business objectifies women, detrimental to body image and exploitation of hopeful young girls. I agree completely.

Please do not watch this kind of show if you have any kind of self-esteem, body image or eating issues. If you do watch it, please remember that the body shapes demanded by the modeling business are far from the norm and that photos and videos can be manipulated, and often are. Do not starve yourself. Do not neglect everything else to become a model. Do not despair if you're not tall, or don't have gorgeous hair, or don't conform to the beauty standards set by the industry. You are beautiful. Everybody is beautiful. Who you are matters so much more than how you look. Take care of yourself (your body and your mind) and love yourself.

Honestly, I think it's awful that 10-year-olds watch these shows and want to be like the girls they see there. I think it would be a good idea to ban them, along with all the other shows and ads that can give people unhealthy ideas of what a body should look like.

However, all that said: If you are confident in your body, if you are aware it's just a show, that much of it is scripted, that we only see a selective slice of reality, and if trashy TV is your guilty pleasure, enjoy these shows. Just don't take them seriously.

So yes, it is my guilty (very guilty, as you can probably tell from the  paragraphs above) pleasure to watch these shows and to mock them relentlessly. I'm sorry, girls, but if, after so many seasons of seeing how relentlessly participants (and judges) are mocked everywhere, you decide to participate anyway, all I can do is tell you and your friends and family not to read my blog.

So anyway, back to the blogging aspect: Since this is a German-language show, it doesn't really make sense for me to write about it in English, since you won't be watching it anyway. However, there will be brief summaries at the beginning of each post, usually about the horrific and inexplicable things Heidi decided to wear in that episode (Dalek coat and hamster life vest, I'm looking at you). If you want more English snark, you might enjoy my Model House Rules (pt I, pt II and pt III).

But don't worry, this won't turn into a complete GNTM blog, I'll still be posting nail art - hopefully more frequently than so far this year.

Have a fantastic weekend!
Captain Spacenails

FFFF: On the new Doctor

Before you start reading, please be aware that this post contains information about the new Doctor. I'll hide videos behind links and won't actually use the actor's name but my comments may still give something away, so if you’re trying to avoid spoilers, enter at your own risk.

Dear readers,

Welcome to the next edition of Friday Flailing!

Last week I told you about my stance on spoilers and how I chose to deal with them in the case of Sherlock. Now it’s time for another of my favourite shows, Doctor Who.

I really didn’t want to know. And then I decided I did, so I’d have time to get used to the new Doctor before Christmas. I fully expect to be underwhelmed and then grow to love him slowly as the eighth series unfolded. Neil Gaiman says it here much more eloquently than me.

But you know what? The instant I heard him say “I’m the Doctor”, I knew he was telling the truth. He IS the Doctor.

There’s been a lot of criticism (more so than with previous Doctors, I think): Time Lords can swap gender, so a female Doctor was a possibility, and instead it’s a man again, and a white one at that. And he’s not even ginger. But quite honestly, I don’t care. Because LOOK at him. He has the classic Doctor Who look. And that little smirk when he says he’s the Doctor, like he’s telling you a secret? That reminds me so badly of the Tenth Doctor it hurts (and Ten is my Doctor).

Am I Ginger? - No, once again. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Some people complain he’s too old to be the Doctor – I beg to differ. People also complained Matt Smith was too young to be the Doctor. Previous Doctors have been older. Canon-wise, it doesn’t matter. The guy is about a thousand years old. And you know what? I actually like it. (And let’s face it, he IS slim and a little bit foxy... )

Why yes, yes you are (Slim and a Little Bit Foxy)

(And as others have pointed out, he did play a WHO doctor in World War Z – best unintentional hint ever!)

I’m looking forward to seeing him in action – and hopefully in interaction with Clara and a certain spoiler-abhorring lady. I started writing a few lines about the latter, but I think she deserves her own post. Look out for River Song polishes, nail art and fangirling next week on Fantabulous Friday Fangirl Flailing! (I still can’t decide in what order those words belong – let’s just call it FFFF, okay?)

I’m sure I will cry when Eleven goes and I’ll miss his bowties and crazy hair, but I don’t think I’ll be as heartbroken as I was when Ten regenerated, because I know a wonderful new Doctor is just around the corner. Welcome, Twelve.

LynBDesigns Am I Ginger? Three coats, sunlight.

For today’s nail art I used LynBDesigns polishes from two of her Doctor Who collections. It shows Doctors Nine to Twelve in Slim and a Little Bit Foxy over Am I Ginger? All nail art shots except for the one at the bottom are with a coat of Lucky 13 Lacquers Revenge is Suede.

I'm not too happy with the nail art - well, Nine and Eleven turned out alright but I had issues with David's glasses and chin. It didn't look quite right without but I couldn't get the shape right. Twelve was tricky because we don't know his distinctive features / clothing style as a Doctor yet. His hair isn't as distinctive either. But I am sure this time next year there will be just the perfect little detail that will characterise him just as much as Matt's bowtie.

The formula, as always, is wonderful to work with. It spreads evenly and dries rather quickly. Am I Ginger is an orange linear holo with quite a good bend. It’s not as crazy holo-y as ILNP's ultra-holos but about on a par with Literary Lacquers. Here it is on its own and in comparison with Literary Lacquers Greatest Treasures (middle finger) and More Like Fire Than Light (pinkie).

Slim and a Little Bit Foxy is a stormy slate grey with dark green particles that are only visible in sunlight. Here it is on its own and with one coat of Oh You Beautiful Idiot, which is from the Innuendos in Space collection just like Slim and a Little Bit Foxy.

What do you think of the new Doctor? Which one is your favourite?

Happy Friday!
Capt. Spacenails
