Hey, you! Yes, you. Wanna buy some polish?

Seriously, this is just a preview. There's more!

Dear readers,
let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved to paint her nails. She enjoyed combining different polishes, making nail art, and buying new polish. She even blogged about it.
But then one day she realised she had used only two polishes for the last four months. She didn’t have time for nail art anymore, and the sight of the polishes in her drawer now filled her with anxiety, not pleasure.

With a heavy heart, she decided to sell some of her polishes. She kept a few, but the others she posted on her blog for sale so that others might give them a better home.

Yes, I’m having a blog sale. Yes, there’s tons of awesome, once-swatched indies up for grabs (and even a few unopened ones). There’s also some commercial high-end and drugstore polishes, and some polishes that have been used more than a few times. These will be clearly marked and priced lower.

Buying more gets you cheaper polishes: Buy 5, get the 6th one (of equal or lower value) free, buy 10 and you get 3 (of equal or lower value) free. If you’re buying more than that, I’ll be sure to throw in some extras!

Prices are in Euro, but since payment is via Paypal, you don’t have to worry about that – you can set it to pay in € and it will apply its conversion rate and charge you in your home currency.

Shipping is from Austria, so it’s a great opportunity for Europeans to get some of those indie polishes without customs and with cheaper shipping. I’ll be in Germany in early July and can post packages from there at domestic rates for Germans (and cheaper rates for others than from Austria), same with the UK in late July.
Overseas shipping, however, is pretty expensive, but might be worth it for out-of-stock polishes, that’s up to you.

The first part of the blog sale (indie polishes) will be going up today, the second part (high-end commercial and drugstore polishes) probably tomorrow. You can reserve items for 72 hours.

But now let’s get back to the story, because there is a happy end.
Our heroine decided she’d just use the polishes left over for a while and see if she felt like blogging. She wasn’t done with nail art completely, she felt, just waiting for inspiration.

Love,
Captain Spacenails

February Tri-Polish Tuesday: Cupcakes

It's Tuesday, and that means it's time for the Tri-polish challenge. The colours are pink, grey and brown, and this time I used all three plus white and glitter. The colours screamed cupcakes to me, so here's some delicious chocolate cupcakes with white and pink toppings, sprinkles and a cherry on top (glitter from Life is Short and You are Hot).

LynBDesigns Eloquent Dust, Boulevard de Beauté 16, MaxFactor Coffee Brown (22), Essie Marshmallow, LOOK white, Lucky 13 Life is Short and You are Hot and Essence Nail Art More Than Silver (10).

This was going to be a post about how I don't actually like cupcakes, because the cream cheese frosting is weird and they're always way too sweet for my taste, but today I met a couple of friends for coffee at a tiny cupcake bakery and I'm willing to admit that I may have judged prematurely.
I had a tiramisu cupcake, which was a perfectly soft and moist chocolate muffin with a just not too sweet tiramisu cream topping. It was divine. I even bought a chocolate-orange cupcake home as a treat for tomorrow (because you really can't eat more than one of those a day, and that was a bit of a struggle). So I change my opinion (because I'm mature enough to admit when I'm wrong): I don't like most cupcakes, but when they are just right, they are divine.

How do you feel about cupcakes? And have you checked out the other contributions yet?

Haul May/Mai 2013

As promised, here's my May haul - at least this one's pretty much on time.

May was definitely an indie month for me. After falling in love with Literary Lacquers in April and seeing The Crumpet's orange holo comparison (do they measure impact ratings in the blog world, like with scientific publications? Because Debbie is definitely on the A-list.)
I got Greatest Treasures, an amazing orange holo that bends into purple. I had this on my nails a few weeks ago and I couldn't stop staring at them and holding them into the light (this was when we still had sunlight, before the rains came and turned Central Europe into November). Gift of the Magi is a very dense green and silver glitter from the collection of the same name (I haven't read the story but it sounds lovely). What Fools These Mortals Be, finally, is from the Midsummer Night's Dream collection - a raucous explosion of glitter of all shapes, sizes and colours. (If you like the look of these, have a look at her new Green Gables collection - the green and turquoise holos are to die for. Guess what you'll be seeing in the June haul post.)

I discovered I Love Nail Polish through a swatch post on Work Play Polish, which featured really beautiful colours. Sadly, both Simply Adorablue and Grape Alicious were sold out (in fact, pretty much all the holos were), so I consoled myself with a couple of Monterey Bay minis and two spectraflair top coats - they're called My Private Rainbow, one is linear, the other is a mix of linear and scattered holo. They sort of smell like glue but the sparkle is amazing! I've been putting it on pretty much every mani at some point. Monterey Bay is a deep green holo with a touch of blue and does not smell, so maybe it's something about the spectraflair base? (Sshh! New collection out today at 3pm MST, which is 11pm Central European Time).

The top picture shows my pick-me-up drugstore acquisitions - if I need cheering up, I'll usually just buy one or two polishes. This also explains the bright colours. I decided I desperately needed more green, so I got s-he 305 and s-he 310. The first one (305) isn't really a colour I'd wear by itself but it should look great in nail art, but 310 is fun and fresh, rather greener than your average mint.
Next is iQ gloss effect in Pink Lady (7) - I bought it for the June tri-polish challenge (at least that was my excuse), but it turns out my other colours don't go with it as well as I hoped. Still, pink!
I'm always on the search for the perfect TARDIS blue. Oh my GOSH Cobalt blue isn't it, but it is truly beautiful. And finally we have The Dark Knight from Catrice, a lovely deep purple.

If you felt there weren't enough blue polishes in my haul this month, you'd be right - there is more.
I was in Germany in May and decided to try Rival de Loop, which we don't get here. For some reason I thought this was a higher-end brand so I was surprised at the low prices, but it really isn't that great. The blue one (High Gloss Colour 043Q) is a nice muted shade, but Express Nails 202, the black with the red glitter, fell a bit short of my expectations - the glitter is hardly visible on the nails. They're also both not very durable and take forever to dry.

When I bought the golden essence 140 go bold! polish for my Iron Man look, I also picked up 147 miss universe, which is a nearly black base with a blue-turquoise shimmer. It's very beautiful on its own, but I need to try it over black and blue.

It seems everyone's always raving about Burt's Bees, so I got myself a "tips and toes kit" with a variety of hand and foot care products as well as lip butter. Since it also includes cuticle butter, it seemed appropriate to include it here (plus I ran out of stuff to show you, so enjoy the closeups of the Literary Lacquers). I think it goes without saying that you shouldn't get Burt's Bees products if you don't like the smell of honey/beeswax, but be aware that the other scents are very strong as well. I like the lemon in the cuticle cream and can deal with the coconut in the foot cream, but the almond milk beeswax hand cream smells too strongly of marzipan for my taste. Good stuff though, all of it. Plus, I get to say that I'm...

Haul April 2013

It's been a while since my last haul post... which of course means that I have an embarrassing amount of nail polish to show you... though perhaps not quite enough, as you'll see tomorrow. In an attempt to not turn this into complete picture spam, I'm making two posts and using collages - you can click on them to enlarge.

So I discovered H&M has polish in fantastic colours! This is a pack of five mini polishes with the imaginative names glittery purple, glittery green, turquoise, orange, and yellow, and the more excitingly named Shanghai Nights. Glittery purple is a mix of tiny bars and round glitter particles in purple, gold, and teal in a relatively clear base, while glittery green should be called glittery teal, because the round glitter here is teal (not that I'm complaining!), also in a clear base. The orange is slightly sparkly and tends towards red, really pretty. The other two are more on the creme-y side, and it just so happens that the yellow is the slightly mustardy yellow required for Star Fleet command shirts, so you've seen it in my Star Trek mani. Shanghai Nights is gorgeous, especially over purple (mani to follow).

Flormar had a 4 for €10,- deal so I picked up the deep classic red M109 (used here), the coral shimmer 08, the nude 124, and the grey M127 I used in last month's tri-polish challenge.

I scored the ones in the bottom picture at a flea markets for crazy good prices. They've all only been swatched. My first butter London, models own and China Glaze polishes! From left to right, they are: Manhattan 97, Manhattan 78C, Models Own Indian Ocean (which you've seen featured as a topper here and here), butter London Scouse and The Black Knight, Jessica 744 Platinum Wishes (never heard of the brand before but it's a lovely fine multi-coloured glitter with blue, green, orange and gold), and China Glaze 1204 Get Carried Away, which is the most unusual topper I have - hard to wear but kinda cool.
There's a beauty blogger flea market this weekend, let's see what I find this time :)

I  succumbed to the draw of Literary Lacquers when I saw the swatches for The Good Parts collection on The Crumpet and on many other blogs and got the fantastic holos If It Pleases You and Laters, Baby. This would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I bought the surprising and mysterious Anny 047 The Answer is Love and got a free mini sample of Dior Diablotine from a Douglas store - I say surprising because despite what you see in the bottle, it is a deep blue with all sorts of red and rust and purple going on on top.

Catrice Mint me up has little gold sparkles in it, which together with the muted mint gives me a sort of art deco feeling.

My sister gave me a bottle of L'Oreal Lush Tangerine that didn't work for her and that I was first only going to use for nail art but since trying it properly, I'm starting to think I should wear orange on my nails.

And finally, experiments with top coats. You've seen the flormar mattifying top coat in action several times already and, though you don't know it, the essence quick dry top coat on pretty much everything else. The essence gel-look top coat does look beautiful but it's so infuriatingly soft! It doesn't matter how long I let it dry, I always ruin it in the end.

Tune in tomorrow for part 2 - the May haul.

The well-stocked nail newbie

Iron Man

I've got another movie mani for you today. 2013 seems to be the year of scifi and fantasy films, what with Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel, Thor 2 The Dark World, Ender's Game, the second part of The Hobbit and Simon Pegg's new movie The World's End, which I cannot wait for because he makes pretty much the funniest films ever. And these are only the ones I'm looking forward to (or enjoyed, in the case of Star Trek) most - there's tons of other interesting ones on the horizon.
One of those was Iron Man 3, which I watched a few weeks ago and enjoyed thoroughly. It was a lot better than the second and was so much fun to watch!

Since I was looking forward to it so much, I did my nails. If anyone's as geeky as me and is wondering, this is the Mark 42 armor, though I added a ring of red around the arc reactor to make it stand out better. If you have no idea what I just said, don't worry, just look at the first picture on this page.
This was a fun mani to make! I painted the whole nail with Essence 140 go bold! and then used Flormar M109 for the red bits of armor. You can't see the Model's Own Indian Ocean well in the pictures but it's on the eyes and the arc reactor to make them glow a bit rather than just being stark white.

Do you like scifi, superheroes and fantasy? What movies are you looking forward to?

Lucy in the sky

Euer glitzerndes Nagelnewbie

Just a few pictures today, of a mani I wore a few weeks ago: MaxFactor Max Effect 14 Dazzling Blue, which shifts wonderfully between light blue and turquoise depending on the angle (you can see the turquoise on the pinky).

On the ring finger, I added a coat of Essence nail art special effect! topper - 10 Glorious Aquarius. It's jam-packed with glitter, I only needed one coat for this result. I particularly like that some of the glitters have a slightly apricot-copperish shimmer, it goes nicely with the blue and green.

I don't usually do accent nails (though I'm not sure why) but I really liked this combo!

Haul März/March 2013

March haul

April is almost half over already, so how about that March haul?
As you can see, the blue phase continues, accompanied by some green and turquoise - and of course my perennial favourites, pink and purple, make an appearance as well.

MaxFactor Max Effect 05 Sunny Pink, 14 Dazzling Blue

You've seen some of these polishes in action and I've already shown you my dotting tools and brushes, which are just barely visible in the foreground. I also bought some "toys" by Essence: a stamping set, a magnetic pen for freestyle magnet patterns, and a "colour changer" polish to go with the nail art pen I bought in January that is supposed to change the colour of the polish. I haven't played with any of these yet though. Oh, and the red pen is cuticle butter.

The toppers

I bought a few cute glitter toppers by Essence:

  • Essence colour & go 33 Just in case (used and shown here)

It's hard to choose a favourite from these because they're all quite lovely, but the blue MaxFactor polish is something special, as you'll see when I post a nail look using it.

I'd like to say I'll show some self-restraint this month, but I've already bought nearly as many as in March (but could you say no to 5 € Butter London?)

The nail newbie, who really has no self-control (but lots of new polish)

Something blue

This month's theme for the amateur nail art challenge over at The Crumpet is "blue". I'm really into blue these days so I was all over this, and I knew immediately what I wanted to do: the TARDIS. I'm a huge Doctor Who fan, I love that time lord and his trusty ship disguised as a blue police call box.

I've also seen some gorgeous Starry Night nails around, and if you've watched Series 5 of Doctor Who, you'll probably guess where this is heading... and if you haven't, well, I'm not going to spoil it for you, because you really should watch it, even if you usually don't watch the show.
So here are my nails, inspired by the episode "Vincent and the Doctor", this digital artwork based on the episode, and, of course, Vincent van Gogh's masterwork.
Source: Google Art Project via Wikimedia

Meine Inspirationen waren also die Folge "Vincent and the Doctor", dieses davon inspirierte digitale Bild sowie natürlich van Goghs Meisterwerk.
The game is on.

I didn't get to it right away though because I was busy, then ill, then busy again, but most of all because I felt I needed proper tools for this. Luckily I had already placed an order for brushes and dotting tools, and when it arrived a couple of days ago, I set to work right away - well, almost right away, first I went to get light blue and brown nail polish to complete my palette.

essence 33 just in case, p2 950 like a movie star, 920 up in the air

The whole thing took me about three hours and I'm insanely proud of how it turned out. I've added photos of the process below in case you're interested.
I'm also experimenting with watermarking, what do you think of mine? Is it too obtrusive or not visible enough? I've decided I want to keep using a Creative Commons license but would prefer to give out non-watermarked pictures only on request to avoid unattributed use of my pictures. That means if someone wants to use them for a blog post or collage or what have you, I'll be happy to send them pictures if they don't want to use them with the watermark. I have no idea if anyone cares about my nails, to be honest, but this took so much work that I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Euer blaumachendes Nagelnewbie
I can tell you one thing for sure: I'm not taking this mani off until I really have to.

"I won't have much to show this month," I told myself, "I still have plenty of most of my skincare products and I've got a bunch of polishes to play around with, besides, I won that package from Ciindey." Okay, so a-england had an irresistible sale and I had to see what all the fuss was about (still waiting for those to arrive, that's why they're not in the picture). And I finally found the sort of purple eyeshadow I was looking for (Astor Eye Artist in 615 - Smokey purple). But honestly, up until about a week ago, my January haul was completely harmless.

Astor Eye Artist 615, essence Alice had a vision - again

nail art paraphernalia

But then I had to go and try nail art and realize that I need a few tools and maybe a few more staple colors. Yellow and orange for rainbows, say.

So I went to the drugstore and bought a few cheap nail liners and yellow polish.

And then I went to this other store and found a few more things that I really really needed. And my nail polish remover was empty. And then I went to another drugstore to buy night cream and they had stuff on sale.

But why am I telling you this, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean...

essence freestyle & tip painter (10 more than silver)

Let's have a look at all this stuff then... For nail art (pic above), I got LOOK nail liner in 1 black und 2 white, b.pretty nail liner in 4 pink, an essence nail art designer set consisting of sponges and a very fine brush, the awesome glittery nail liner on the left and something that I just had to buy because it sounded so cool: "colour and change magic effect designer" by essence, which is supposed to change the color of the polish on which it is applied. I haven't tried it yet, though, because I had a bit of a reading fail there: it only works on a special kind of polish. Duh.

"regular" polishes - die "normalen" Lacke

Normale Lacke von links nach rechts / Regular polishes, left to right:
b.pretty (25 yellow), catrice (C02 For Bright Guys - Limited Edition NEONaturals), flormar supershine miracle colors (U03), Isadora Wonder Nail (751 Arctic Treasure) (hier verwendet/used here), s-he (340) (hier geswatched/swatched here)

I also got a catrice Quick Dry & High Shine Top Coat, a sample of  inglot's nail polish remover and a bottle of "essence nail art nail polish remover ultra", which removes the polish with just one or two swipes. I think I've found my nail polish remover of choice.
Then there's just my alverde night cream and a shine spray. I keep my hair really short so I don't really use any other hair product than gel and shine sprays, but I do love those.

So yeah, this ended up being quite a haul after all... let's see how February goes ;)

The unable-to-resist-shiny-stuff nail newbie
