Conversations with myself (Holo addiction)

They call it internal monologue, but for me, it’s more of an internal dialogue.

“OOH, WILL YOU LOOK AT THOSE HOLOS!”
“Yes, they’re very pretty.”
“I MUST HAVE THEM ALL!”
“But when you bought those spectraflair topcoats, you said we’d never have to buy holos again.”
“You’re so naive. Have you met me? Of course I have to buy more polish.”
“But you said you could just put it on your favourite polishes and turn them into holos.”
“Yes, I could. But none of my polishes is that exact shade of green! And the holo looks different!”
“Okay, so maybe one or two. I must admit, that green holo is exceptionally pretty.”
“ALL THE COLOURS.”
“There’s three different greens there. And you just ordered another green holo yesterday.”
“SO?”
“Point taken. But think of the shipping.”
“They’ve reduced shipping.”
“Maybe, but we might have to pay customs.”
“But see, if I buy this many polishes, the import duties will still be lower than the shipping for a second order would be. So I’m actually saving us money by buying more!”
“You already said that with yesterday’s order.”
“That does not invalidate my argument.”
“I'm not sure it's valid in the first place...Well, okay then, but make sure the import duties you’re incurring stay below shipping costs.”
“But then I can’t take all the greens!”
“... You must be gutted they reduced shipping.”

Literary Lacquers: Green Gables, Lake of Shining Waters, Raspberry Cordial?, More Like Fire Than Light

(Two hours later)

“I see you finally decided, just got the order confirmation. Good work not going over the customs limit, but I don’t see any greens.”
“Yeah, I changed my mind. I really wanted the blue and the purple and you were right, that green kinda looked similar to the one I ordered yesterday and OH GOD I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE GREEN SHOULDN'T I?!"
“Well, you're not getting it now, you already placed the order."
“BUT I WILL DIE.”

I Love Nail Polish: Bohemian Peacock, Amanda Hugginkiss, Blue Steel

(Ten days later)

“They’re here! They’re here!”
“Which order?”
“Both! Look how pretty!

“Wow. Just wow.”
“I knew you’d like them!”
“Hey, just because I’m trying to be the voice of reason here doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate polish.”
“And look what a pretty rainbow they make together.”
“So we don’t have to buy the whole range of Dance Legend Prism holos after all?”
“Haha. You’re funny.”
All the glorious holos in a row. Swatches coming soon. Spoiler: I'm in love!
Also, I totally should've gotten the green one all the colours.

Note: Any links to external blogs or stores are pure link love - no advertising or affiliate linking going on here. I paid for everything, as my rational side would be happy to tell you if it weren't so busy oohing and aahing about the polishes.

Minnie-cure

I got a very special package this week from Sabrina at Polish Alcoholic. If you don’t know her, check out her blog, you won’t regret it. She does beautiful nail art and posts tutorials for them as well. Her site is also one of my go-to blogs for swatches, since she reviews a lot of polish from both commercial and indie makers. Go check it out now, then come back!

A while ago she had a giveaway for the OPI “Couture de Minnie Runway Minnies” set and I got lucky! It arrived on Monday, probably the fastest an international package I’ve ever gotten, it took just 3 days from the Netherlands to Austria! I was really excited about this because the colours in this collection are so gorgeous. Look how beautifully she wrapped it! Even though I knew what it was, opening a gift package just makes it more special.

Now you may be thinking “you got it Monday, why haven’t you thanked her yet?” and you’d be right. But see, I wanted to do it properly. I loved the polish so much that I decided to make a very special manicure just for her. A Minnie-cure, if you will.

I started with a skittle to show off all the colours. The light pink is three coats but the others are just one coat each,  and they were all delightful to work with. That’s Chic from Ears to Tail on the pointer, A Definite Moust-Have on the middle finger, Innie Minnie Mighty Bow (my favourite – look at that gleam!) on the ring finger and Magazine Cover Mouse on the pinky, which, by the way, is my first sand polish. I’m not sure about the texture but it looks beautiful!

But you know me, I never do things the easy way, so I started messing around a bit. The heart on the pointer is sand polish, doesn’t it gleam wonderfully? I’m not sure the dots were a good idea, they look a bit out of place.  On the pinky I tried to create nail art with a top coat but you couldn’t really see it, so I just coated the whole nail.

Of course I could't leave my thumb white, so I tried to paint Minnie herself. It's not quite as stylish as the original, but then, who could ever copy Minnie's style?

And finally, the ring finger is both self-explanatory and the most important one in this mani: Thank you so much, Sabrina!

I think we would've all done better at school if we'd gotten nail polish for our essays

Hi everyone, I've been quiet for the last few weeks - I've had loads of work and it's planting season, and on top of it all, my Internet's all wonky and keeps losing connection, and after a while I got fed up with trying to reconnect every half an hour. I feel like in the old days on dial-up when you only connected when you had to send an e-mail or research something really quickly. Still, I have plenty of stuff to show you so I'm hoping I'll get enough connectivity to post this :)

Today's post is a big, fat, overdue thank you post to the girls of Varnished Valkyrie.

In March, they had a contest with the funniest Rafflecopter questions I have ever seen. (Go here for the questions and hilarious answers.) And even more entertaining, they decided to add an essay option: two winners would be determined by random drawing, but a third winner would be selected from among those who posted a mini essay on one of three topics, and that person would get to choose their reward first, because, as they said, "You spent time writing a flipping mini essay about something random for a nail blog.  You deserve something for that."

Well, I’m always up for weird stuff and I love to write, and I felt quite passionately about one of the topics (music), so I went and wrote an essay. And would you believe it? They liked mine best!

There were three lovely prizes to choose from, but one not only included nail decorations, a lovely indie and Urban Outfitters Sea Dust, it also included the legendary MaxFactor Fantasy Fire. Guess what I picked...

Two weeks ago, I got mail from the US – and I’m really sorry I haven’t posted this earlier, but I wanted to do this properly and not just sneak it in while I should be working.

Here's a detailed look at the beauties - please forgive the slightly untidy swatching/ Sehen wir uns die zauberhaften Lacke mal genauer an - entschuldigt die etwas unschönen Swatches:

Urban Outfitters: Sea Dust

A wonderful flittery glittery muted greenish base that looks like foam on a stormy sea, with somewhat bigger turquoise glitter particles.
Pleasant formula, the picture shows one coat.
This is apparently a near-dupe for Deborah Lippmann's Mermaid's Dream.

Darling Diva Polish: Wedding Day Jitters

This is a funny one, it looks pink in the bottle but if you apply it on its own, it looks mainly blue. This makes it pretty much the polar opposite of Models Own Indian Ocean in my mind, which looks blue in the bottle but looks pink on its own.
(Over white they both have more of their bottle colour.)

The swatch shows Models Own on the left, Darling Diva on the Right, and Models Own over Darling Diva in the middle.Would you have guessed?

I like this one, it's quite subtle in tone but has fantastic glitter shapes (hearts, diamonds, hexagons, squares) that add bling.

MaxFactor - Fantasy Fire

I think this polish needs no introduction. It's every bit as brilliant as I've heard.
I started off by layering it over different shades of purple (and on its own on the pinkie).
The undies are LOOK Nail Quickie Mystic, OPI Purple with a Purpose, and IQ Cosmetics violet (No. 8) - the order of the nails and the bottles is identical.

This is just one coat of each. As you can see, Mystic is a very dark purple with more red than blue in it. What surprised me is that Fantasy Fire is so unassuming on its own.

But add it as a top coat and you see the magic at work!
It's pretty, if a little subtle on the other shades, but on top of Mystic - bam! I find it fascinating how different (in the case of the bottom picture, green) it looks from other angles. I see a lot more layering experiments in my future.

I have plans for the little copper beads and rhinestones too - once my nails have recovered from gardening (cf. Models Own swatch)...

If you don't know Varnished Valkyrie yet, I recommend browsing their blog a bit. We share a love of Doctor Who, Monty Python and general geekiness, they have great manis and their posts are fun to read. And if you're intrigued by the idea of giveaways that require some thinking, you might want to check out their Literary Lacquers contest (ends May 3rd). I didn't participate of course but I'm enjoying reading the answers!

Thank you so much, Kas, George and Robyn, I love my prize!

Gewonnen! / I won something!

I mentioned in my Pre-Spring Challenge post (which never went any further, turns out daily challenges are way too stressful for me) that I'd won the polishes I used for the flowers. I won them in a Christmas giveaway at German blogger Ciindey's blog My Faible, where she blogs about beauty, baking and other things. Since she was really busy with an internship she didn't manage to mail it right away, which didn't bother me at all - mail is awesome whenever I get it, I was thrilled to have won. But she still added a few extras though I told her she needn't. But see for yourselves:

The actual prize was this fantastic set of 8 polishes, a nail file, finger separators, 2 cuticle sticks and a pouch - but as you can see, the plastic packaging doesn't close properly. I wonder why that could be...
Aha! Must be the pouch bulging with extras!

I love that I got Carmex lip balm because I've been meaning to try their products - and the extra nail polish is gorgeous, just like the other colors (which I've already swatched and/or used since).
And will you look at that cute pouch? I love the red dots!

I tried the Biocura nail polish right away and it's gorgeous! The coverage is pretty good - I used two coats and a top coat but it was already pretty good at just one coat.

The German name of the colorway (03 - Fliederzauber) means "lilac magic" and I really like the basic lilac color it has in natural light. Ciindey listed this polish as one of her 2012 favorites and although the durability isn't very good, I have to agree just for the color alone.

But what's even better is the way this color reflects the light. I kept staring at my nails that seemed to burn with orange and blue. This stuff virtually glows under artificial light! It's like I have little gas flames in my nails or something.

And here's another picture because I just can't get enough of it.

Here's a picture of a quick and slightly messy mini-swatch of three of the polishes in the set - the one on the far left in the photo above is on my index finger (lovely snowy glitter), the furthest right on my little finger (a nice silver), and the one next to it on my ring finger (more of a silverish gunmetal grey).
The one on my middle finger is a bit of a weird one that looked better in the bottle than it doese in the picture, though that may be the contrast with the other nails - a dark grey with flecks of gold, s-he in colorway 340. What can I say, it was on sale... ;)

As for the others in this collection, I used the two pinks for my flower nails and I'll show you the others soon. The blue is the most amazing Tardis blue!

Dein freudenspringendes Nagelnewbie

Thanks again, Ciindey, I love all the things you sent me!
