Oops... Haul

You know how this one goes.
If you've read my Cirque du Soleil post, you know I've got a few new nail polishes. Well, I say "a few"...
So here's what happened. I'd run out of shower cream. And then this happened. Yeah, oops.

LOOK Satin finish compact powder - Nr. 2 Cameo

Okay, so maybe I wasn't quite that innocent. I was well aware that Bipa (an Austrian drugstore) had a -15% deal on makeup and wanted to grab some powder, blush and maybe a bottle of nail polish.
But then there was this bargain bin. LOOK polishes were €1 and iQ Cosmetics polishes were €3 (both are store brands) so what was I to do? And since they had that -15% deal I practically had to buy a few regularly priced polishes too. Anything else would've been quite irresponsible.

But let's start with the glaring omission in the first picture: no blush. I guess they'd been robbed or something because I couldn't find a suitable blush to save my life. Well, I got a brush and a nail file instead and snagged the last powder. And my new favorite shower cream. Florena is a former GDR brand that is still very popular in Germany and has made it to Austria as well. This one's with olive oil and moisturizes my skin wonderfully and - always important for little miss sensitive - has a very mild and inoffensive smell.

Right, okay, I know this is what you've all been waiting for: Nail polish! Lots of it!

As you can see I grabbed a whole lot of LOOK. Most are from the bargain bin, except for the black, which I needed as an undie for the Orly Sunglasses at Night I ordered (squee!) and other toppers, and the "green changer", which I've been lusting after for a while, a wonderful gold/green duochrome. Mystic is a really dark purple and I think the rest speak for themselves.

So tolle Farben!

Also from the bargain bin we have iQ Nail Attraction in 8 violet, then a wonderful minty green from the new iQ colour flash collection, and finally - most definitely not from the bargain bin - my two favorites, Maybelline Colorama in 661 Ocean Blue and Gosh in 540 Ocean. Amazing colors! You may remember those two from my Cirque du Soleil mani.

Euer völlig kontrolliert einkaufendes Nagelnewbie

I had to try the Gosh polish right away. I'd say the brand is aptly named. The color is just gorgeous! I couldn't quite get the color to show in the photos, it's a bit less light blue and more turquoise than in the picture, with a slight colorshift.

So yeah, that was my accidental little haul. I'd say I'm planning to avoid any more accidents but I still need that blush, don't I?

The totally not shopaholic nail newbie

Mein Bart gehört mir

In which the Nail Newbie is ill and watches more German trash TV.

Also alles in allem schrecklich klischeehaftes, sexistisches und absolut unechtes Fernsehen.

Update: Seht alle Beiträge hier / View all entries here.

This look was inspired by Cirque du Soleil's Varekai show. It's an entry for a "Circus"-themed contest held by http://missxtravaganz.blogspot.com. Even if you don't read German I recommend having a look at her amazing looks and photography (check the tabs at the top as well). Read on for more information (now updated with daylight pictures).

Offizielle Einreichung / my official entry (complete with typo)

without top coat, artificial light

I've been sick in bed for a few days and was surfing the net, as you do, when I came upon the blog and the contest. I guess I was feeling pretty inspired after seeing all those amazing looks on Missy's blog so when I saw the challenge was to create a "Circus" look, I knew I had to do something on my nails and I knew it had to be Cirque du Soleil.
The contest is for eye makeups, whole looks, nail art, and you could even do bodypainting if you wanted (I hope someone does!) - and she told her readers to interpret the topic to be "colorful, happy, maybe even creepy or fairy tale-like". Well, I think this puts me solidly in the creepy category.

lurking... (with top coat, daylight)

well, I think this justifies my haul - I'm using them

I've loved the circus since I was a kid. We'd go there once a year and it was the absolute highlight of the year. We went to "classic" circuses with animals and clowns and sometimes to the Chinese circus (I don't like animal acts anymore, but I still like going to the Chinese circus). Three years back I saw Cirque du Soleil's "Varekai" and was mesmerized. I felt like a child again, gaping in wonder and getting sucked into that world of magic and fantasy. Varekai is a story set in a forest full of strange creatures... and one of them was my inspiration.

I see you... (with top coat, daylight)

with top coat, daylight
I already had Gosh in Ocean on my nails (my new favorite and part of a haul that I haven't shown you yet, like half the colors in the picture.)
With a sponge, I applied a little dark blue Maybelline Colorama (Ocean Blue) onto my thumb, pinky and middle finger. The red "crest" on the middle finger is a mix of the red Boulevard de Beauté (No. 7) and the orange Catrice (For Bright Guys - it's more orange than in that photo), applied with the one of the edges of the sponge. While that was drying, I drew the white and red part of the eyes with my fine brush (nail art with eye makeup, that's a new one for me).
I then mixed the blue Colorama with the black LOOK polish and applied it with the sponge to make the ridges on the sides. I also did lighter ridges on the pinky and thumb - the "legs". I added an additional layer of blue sponging though to make them less prominent. You can just make them out on my thumb here.

Then I added a tiny bit of pink (Catrice Karl Says Très Chic) into the sides of the eyes and painted the black eyeliner, eyebrow and pupil, and finally I made a subtle ombrè using LOOK in crystal sky and the white nail art liner and applied it below the eyes with my sponge.

(Edit: Ist hiermit geschehen. Hab die anderen zum Vergleich dringelassen.)

with top coat, daylight

The initial pics in this post (which I've since edited to add pictures and text) as well as my contest entry were taken in the middle of the night so they're in artificial light and prior to applying a top coat - the top coat smudged Andy a bit in the Valentine's mani and I didn't want to risk that happening here.
The topcoat was fine though, so now there's shiny daylight pictures too.

What do you think? To me, the mani doesn't really scream "circus", clowns or tightrope walkers would be better for that, but I really like how this turned out. It's definitely creepier than clowns though (unless you're creeped out by clowns, of course).

And that's enough of me posting while sick, time to watch some stupid TV, which, as we all know, is just what the doctor ordered ;) (Though I'm definitely feeling better already, seeing as I'm able to do midnight manis and post on my blog...)

The definitely recovering nail newbie

Zombie Valentine (choose your own adventure)

Valentine's Day mani (this pic is closest to true color)

Come into my arms, my dear!

Some days I'm all pink and girly and some days I'm - just not. Which is why this is not a post about pink Valentine's Day nails with hearts on them. Well, it is, but that's not all. There is a tale of romance or of star-crossed (zombie-crossed?) lovers, you get to choose. This mani turned out to be rather versatile, so it's both for people who love Valentine's Day and those who don't care for it.
Though if you prefer things cute and romantic, you should probably stop reading now and not look any further than these two pictures.

You're reading on? Cool, I'm glad, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Because what you and the stick figure waiting on the right don't know is why the other one is running. Here's what really happened (with unisex names, too - this really is a choose-your-own-adventure mani):

Graaah... braaaains.....

Not so sweet now, is it?

Possibly a "Warm Bodies" preview?

euer romantisches Nagelnewbie

Not undead - they prefer "differently alive" (quote T. Pratchett)

Or perhaps it is the story of a love that transcends all differences and prejudice, ignores such irrelevant matters as vital signs or rotting flesh? A love where you may not run, but at least shamble towards your beloved? A love that looks beneath the exterior, that prefers inner values - because a heart does not have to beat to love, and because, after all, zombies love a girl with brains.

A happy Valentine's Day from
the romantic Nail Newbie

Note: Because I'm easily amused and hope others are too, I'm using this as my entry for the February Amateur Nail Art Contest at The Crumpet.

The Model House Rules (Part III)

I'm sorry this took me a while, but here you go: The third and final part of my model casting show advice. (Though who knows, more may be added as the current season of Austria's NTM progresses and the new season of Germany's NTM starts.)

15. (and this may be the most important one of all) Don’t say anything you wouldn’t want the entire world including your parents, friends, teachers and classmates / other students at uni / people at your workplace to know. Not in the confession room, not in a quiet conversation with one of the other girls or one of the judges, nowhere. The juicier it is, the surer you can be it’ll be on TV. And if you’re not a finalist and maybe get kicked out after a couple of rounds, you will be going back to school/uni/work. And they will know. Because don’t doubt for a moment they aren’t watching the show to get some dirt on you.
Here's an easy test: Imagine you’re at your grandma's birthday with your entire extended family, and then suddenly you get up on the table and say it. And then you go to school / uni / work and everyone’s gathered together and you go up front and say it in front of everyone.  And then you go to the shops, hairdressers and cafés you and your family frequent, and you tell them all. And if you live in a small town where everybody’s celebrating the fact that "one of our girls" is on this show, you better put up a billboard in the center of town and distribute flyers with this thing you’re gonna say. If you’re comfortable with that, go ahead and say it on TV, because that’s what the result will be.

16. And on that note: If you have a boyfriend, he’s probably watching this too. Sure, there’s a time delay between filming and broadcast, but unless you want him to watch you make out with that hottie, don’t do it. It just leads to a tearful phone call that will of course be recorded and broadcast.

17. There will be a really gross challenge. There’s probably some creature involved that you really can’t stand. Either be prepared to do it or go home. Don’t be the one who is photographed with fear in her tear-filled eyes. That one usually goes home anyway so might as well save yourself the terror.

18. There will be exercise. If you didn't before, make sure you start working out as soon as you start entertaining the notion of going on this show. You'll want to build up endurance and coordination. Because there will be this one challenge where they torture you in some way (running on a treadmill in heels or running up a ski jumping hill come to mind), and whoever loses gets eliminated or at least gets to pick their room last and is stuck sleeping on the couch.
Also, if you're a klutz like me, try taking some dance classes or gymnastics or something so you can at least fake grace because you will probably have to at some point.

19. There’s so much boring waiting time at these challenges and castings and photo shoots. I’ve only once seen a girl take a book with her. She seemed well-balanced and happy. If I were on one of those shows, I’d totally take a book so I didn’t die of boredom. Or something crafty. How cool would that be, having the whole country watch your crocheting/drawing/knitting/whatever? You could start a new trend.

20. This is a new one, courtesy of the current season of Austria's NTM: Don't lie about your age. Or if you do, make sure you do it so well nobody will ever find out. Don't, say, go to a casting and then when they ask you how old you are say "22" when even your comp card says otherwise. Because then they'll say "It says here you're 26" and then you'll say "That's my model playing age"* (actually, don't say that, at least try to seem contrite about blatantly lying), and then you don't get booked. Or ever invited again.

* True story.

We got a nice example of Rule 10 last week - okay, so it was 5am, not 4.30, and shockingly while they had to get downstairs in 10 minutes, it was just for morning exercise and they got to eat breakfast. Tsk.
We've also seen Rule 18 ticked in multiple ways - military obstacle course, ski jumping hill, kickboxing, swimming, diving, general running, treadmills placed so that if you quit you fall into cold water, and the inevitable dance challenge.
Since I added it because of this season, Rule 20 obviously got a hit. Strangely, there hasn't been anything seriously gross so far. And the only animals involved in a shooting were camels. (A spider had a small cameo but I'm not sure the girls even noticed because they were all looking at Zombie Boy.) Still, I expect that to change as the competition gets hotter.

That's the rules, girls! Got any to add?

The obnoxiously know-it-all Nail Newbie

Beautesse Unboxing

The Beautesse Box arrived this week. Of course I already knew what was going to be in it - the descriptions are posted on the Beautesse website and here's my preliminary analysis from December.
It was still great fun to open the box and to test and rate everything! Here's what I got:
There was a 10% cosmetics store voucher and one for a skin analysis to determine the right IOMA cream for you - gonna skip the latter, see below.

Tops:

Definitely the highlight of this box, I adore the color (No. 8 Papaya). The only negative point I can think of is its delicious smell (blackcurrant, not papaya), which means I end up licking it off my lips ;) Apologies for the awful swatch, I just cannot get the color right...

Mild and pleasant smell (citrus with wood notes, maybe sandalwood?), easy to apply, feels good on the skin. This came at the perfect time, as I had just finished the Ingrid Millet Caviarissime day cream from the December Beautesse box (which means that one lasted for two months despite daily use - now that's what I call a luxury sample! And it felt great.)

This razor is good. Feels good while using, your legs end up wonderfully smooth and soft, so the hydration thing seems to be working. I personally find it a bit too bulky and unwieldy, I'd prefer a somewhat slimmer design - this isn't exactly travel size. It's fine for use at home though and comes with a protective lid and a holder to fix it to the shower wall. I guess we'll see whether I end up buying new blades for this one or stick with my Gillette (which I'll keep  for travel purposes in any case), but I definitely give it a thumbs up.

I was really looking forward to this one because I hadn't tried Smashbox products before. And I wasn't disappointed, the "light" color is just right for my pale skin and the results are great.

Flops:

Sorry, not impressed.
I tested one of these because I was curious (and judging by the google searches leading to my blog, so are others - sorry I didn't have any info for you earlier). They look very exciting and medicinal in their single-dose blister packs. But what's behind it?
Well, first you've got the issue of packaging - there's a lot of it and it's annoying. While blister packs are really convenient for pills, they're not really made for creams, which lack the necessary resistance to burst through the foil (and let's face it, if they did burst through it would be a nasty mess). So you have to pull off the foil on the back by hand and end up with what is really only a fingertip-sized plastic bowl.
I personally am not crazy about the texture either, it's got a weird viscosity that grosses me out; it's a sort of milky white and is a bit thinner than I like my day creams - somehow it reminds me of custard that got wet. The skin does feel nice and smooth afterwards though.
They're convenient for overnight stays or short weekend breaks when you want to pack lightly, and I'll keep the rest for that purpose, but there's way too much packaging on them for everyday use. Sorry, not impressed.

The only reason this is listed as a flop is because it's a men's shower gel. I think I ranted quite enough about that in my December post - in my opinion it doesn't really fit the needs of the target group (i.e., women) and it's just unnecessary. That's why I count it as a flop instead of a "not my style, ah well" product. Nevertheless, I'm sure a lot of people will be excited to get this in their boxes, it smells really nice. My brother was happy to take it.

The rest:

This one comes with a sort of applicator so I assume you're supposed to smooth it into wrinkles. I don't have any yet so I can't really tell you whether it works, but I'm sure prophylactic use won't hurt me, what do you think? The scent is quite pleasant, it somehow reminds me of hair conditioner. It does leave the skin shiny and a bit greasy.

The next three aren't really flops as such, they're good products, I'm just so sensitive when it comes to scents - but they've all already been rehomed to people who adore them so it's all good. (And I got a lip gloss from a friend's Glossy Box, we always mix and match these things :) )

Dot - Marc Jabobs: Sehr süßer Flakon! Nicht mein Duft, aber siehe oben. - Very cute miniature bottle! Not my scent, rehomed.

- Quite inoffensive, feels good on the skin, I could even use this in a pinch. But since I have so many lotions at home, I gave this to a friend who would truly appreciate it.

- A bit of a surprise, I had assumed this would be a scent (turns out some people got shower gel or scents). Still not my thing so it was sent to a loving home.

Euer zufriedenes Nagelnewbie

I'm happy with this box. There are some really great products and only two I consider real flops. (I'm sure others will disagree and I've already seen different opinions on other blogs.)
I like that the samples are decently sized - some of them could even pass as full size products if you ask me. Of course there's smaller ones in there too (like the Smashbox BB cream) but most of them will last you more than a couple of days, giving you time to test them properly.
I'm not sure yet whether I'll get the next box in three months - it really depends on what's in it. Which is another reason why I like the Beautesse box and can't wait to see the next preview.

Gravi-was?

Oh brilliant, another trashy TV show to get hooked on. This one's the German remake of Beauty and the Geek and oh boy is it over the top. (Of course it's a remake. The only original "reality" show in Germany or Austria that I know of was Taxi Orange in the early 2000s, in response to Big Brother. It was really just like Big Brother except the candidates got to leave the house in an orange taxi that they drove around Vienna and the income they made from that was their food budget. There were cameras in the taxi so of course only people who wanted to be on TV got in so they didn't exactly get their crazy real-life taxi stories. I remember it fondly though, it was the first reality soap I saw.)
So in this post I rant about the first episode and the obviously fake dialogues and crazy clichés of dumb beauties and nerds with bad teeth and facial hair like a serial killer. And yet... the lure of trash TV is irresistible.
My favorite moment: the nerd riding in a DALEK! HE'S GOT ONE OF THOSE DALEK VEHICLES! Marry me.

Beauty and the Nerd - meine Güte, da ist ja mal echt tief in die Klischeekiste gegriffen worden.
Sie: "Gravi-was?"

Will haben.

Also verratet mir bitte: hättet ihr's gewusst?

- "Marilyn Monroe."
Frage für Nerd 2: "Wie heißt die Hauptfigur aus der Serie Sex and the City?" - "Carrie Pratcher?"
- "Eyeliner." Ja hallo Jungs, da geht ja was!

Will ja schließlich das Einkaufswagenrennen sehen.
